Following our Safety Alert about the risks of waratah rammers, Safer Farms member Dairy Holdings shared what they have done to make these tools safer on farm.
In June 2022, they had two incidents involving waratah rammers. In one case, a worker mis-hit the waratah, causing his hand to slip off the handle and onto the waratah. This resulted in a deep cut to his middle finger and a ligament injury.
To prevent this from happening again, Dairy Holdings added a safety guard to the bottom of their rammers to stop hands from slipping past the handle and also moved to a longer rammer (80 cm).
